CTP Physiotherapy After a Car Accident: What You Need to Know

(Source: Health on Grange Physiotherapy, n.d)

A car accident can leave you with pain, stiffness or reduced movement — even if you felt fine immediately afterwards.

Neck pain, headaches, back pain and muscle soreness can sometimes develop hours or days after an accident. If you’ve been injured in a motor vehicle accident in Queensland, CTP insurance may help cover your physiotherapy treatment, depending on your circumstances and claim.

At Physio on Ross, we want to help people in Townsville understand their treatment options and work towards getting back to their normal activities.

What is CTP insurance?

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance is attached to registered vehicles in Queensland. It provides a pathway to compensation and treatment for people injured in eligible motor vehicle accidents.

Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to make a CTP claim if you were injured as a:

  • Driver
  • Passenger
  • Cyclist
  • Pedestrian

If your claim is eligible, physiotherapy may form part of your rehabilitation.

What injuries can physiotherapy help with?

Car accidents can cause a range of musculoskeletal injuries, including:

  • Whiplash and neck pain
  • Back pain and stiffness
  • Shoulder pain
  • Muscle and soft-tissue injuries
  • Joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Reduced movement and flexibility
  • Muscle weakness

Your physiotherapist will assess your individual symptoms and develop a treatment plan based on your needs and recovery goals.

Do symptoms always appear straight away?

Not necessarily.

It’s common for pain and stiffness to become more noticeable later in the day or over the following few days. Symptoms can include neck stiffness, headaches, shoulder or back pain, muscle soreness and reduced movement.

If you develop new or persistent symptoms after an accident, having them assessed can help you understand what is going on and what steps you can take towards recovery.

How does CTP physiotherapy work?

The process will depend on your individual circumstances, but generally:

1. Lodge your CTP claim

Identify the relevant CTP insurer and lodge your claim. Keep your claim number and other accident information available.

2. Contact our clinic

Let us know that your injury is related to a motor vehicle accident. We can discuss the information needed to arrange your appointment.

3. Have your injury assessed

At your first appointment, your physiotherapist will discuss your accident and symptoms and assess your movement, strength and physical function.

4. Follow your rehabilitation plan

Your physiotherapist will work with you on appropriate treatment, exercises and advice to help you improve movement and return to your usual activities.

Where applicable, treatment arrangements and funding will depend on your CTP claim and insurer approval.

Do I need a GP referral?

Generally, you can contact a physiotherapist directly to arrange an appointment.

However, CTP claims can have specific requirements, so the arrangements for your treatment will depend on your individual circumstances.

You don’t necessarily need private health insurance to access CTP-funded treatment.

What if my CTP claim is still being processed?

You don’t have to ignore your symptoms while waiting for your claim to progress.

Contact our clinic and explain your situation. We can discuss what information you have available and help you understand the next steps for arranging an assessment.

If you’re unsure about your CTP eligibility, claim requirements or legal entitlements, the relevant CTP insurer or the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) can provide information about your circumstances.

When should I see a physiotherapist?

If pain, stiffness or restricted movement is affecting your sleep, work, driving, exercise or everyday activities after a car accident, a physiotherapy assessment may be helpful.

The earlier you understand your injury and what you can do to manage it, the easier it can be to take an active role in your recovery.
