I sprained my ankle! “She’ll be right?”
As Physio’s we often hear people say things like. “I rolled my ankle, but I did no rehab on it.” “I injured my ankle in soccer and it’s never felt the same.” “I have rolled my ankle three times and now it’s become very weak, making it hard to play sport.”
Ankle sprains are the most common sports injury and have the highest recurrence rate of all injuries. Statistics show that 1/3 athletes develop long-term ankle instability. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you follow through with the needed rehabilitation process. Exercise therapy can reduce the risk of re-injury by 42% (Doherty et. al 2016). Rehabilitation is a great way to avoid further injuries.
It is never too late to start with the rehabilitation process of an ankle injury. It would obviously be more beneficial if the rehabilitation process starts within the acute phase of your injury.
